The necessity of a Program to support Education for sustainable development in Bulgaria
The Education for sustainable development (ESD) becomes a priority in response to the aggravating anthropoecological crisis. The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) has decided to initiate a Decade of the ESD (2005-2014). In order to establish a national ESD, a program is required, which will outline the directions and specific activities to support and conduct the national policy in this field.
The Program is part of the process of collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Environment and Water and shares their mutual responsibility in conducting the national policy for a sustainable development in Bulgaria. It allows every interested party to perform activities for ESD development on a local, regional and national scale.
The main purpose of the Program is to support the establishment of ESD in all kinds of formal and informal education from the position of Continuing Education for Life, by encouraging the integrated discussion on and study of the environment and the ESD problems.
Main target groups of the Program are children, young people and adults of all grades and parts of the educational system.
